 I get a lot of questions from folks about how to get started in racing. While there are a lot of resources out there that you can access for advice, here is some direct input on how to get on track right away.

First, find your local indoor karting track. They have sprung up everywhere now. These tracks are setup to be accessible to every level of experience. There are some that are more entertainment focused, while others are a bit more serious with regards to competition. Either way, find a track and go drive! If you are a novice, go during the week when it will be less crowded. A Friday or Saturday night is not the time to go, as it will be busy and there will be long waits. As you gain experience, consider joining a league if they have one. This will allow you to race with faster and more consistent drivers.

Second, if you have done that a few times (well, more than a few), the next great opportunity is to race with my friends at Endurance Karting. Chris McCoy and his team put on arrive and drive races all across the east coast and midwest. This is your opportunity to step it up a notch and drive on real outdoor karting tracks, with faster karts. While the races are competitive, the priority is on safety and fun. Plus, if you want help before you jump into a 6+ hour endurance race, EK puts on schools the day before the race.  The schools cater to all skill levels, and maybe you will get lucky and have me as your instructor!  The intro to karting school takes you all the way from classroom discussion and the physics of karting to lead follow, as well as other exercises before having a mock race. If you have done this and now want to start driving full blown race cars, find a good racing school to attend. I personally attended the Lucas Oil School of Racing and did both their basic and advanced courses. It's tons of fun, and you will learn a lot. But there are others out there as well that will provide great experience so do a little bit of research. While doing full schools like this can be pricey, learn the proper way from a reputable school as it will pay off in the long run (and it helps you earn a license from a sanctioning body).

Once you have done that, you need to make a decision on what type of racing you want to do, and how much you want to spend. You do not have to buy your own car; there are arrive and drive teams that will rent you a car for a weekend and provide all of the support you need. You just drive the car. Costs vary greatly based on the series, type of car, etc. But, you can find something for all budgets to get started. We will cover that in another post.
